Iceland Budget Wrap-Up

So, how did we do on our Iceland budget? Were we able to enjoy ourselves without spending a fortune in what was once (and maybe still is?) known as the most-expensive country in Europe?

Absolutely.

Here's how our budget broke down:
flights - $1300
hotel - $380 (a little more than budgeted)
car rental plus gas for two days- $250 (a little less than budgeted thanks to shopping around at the rentals desk)
dog sledding - $500
snorkeling - $250
horseback riding - $100 (less than budgeted thanks to a better exchange rate)
Blue Lagoon - $70
additional museum fees - around $20
duty free purchases (1 liter of vodka and 2 bottles of wine) - $40
groceries for the room, misc (bottled water, etc) - $40
bus from city to the airport - $30
drinks and dining - $330
Total - $3310

Our original goal was to spend $2000 once we arrived. As it turns out we spent $2010 in country (not including $200 in shopping) over the course of 6 nights, 7 days.

Of course, that doesn't include the $50 we spent on food at ORD in Chicago and then at JFK waiting for our international flight, nor the $90 we spent on cabs (we had to transfer from LGA to JFK both times, and we were so tired we took a cab home when we arrived). So we learned a valuable lesson about budgeting - when we plan our budget, we need to remember to figure in cabs and what we are going to inevitably spend in the airport.

But overall, I'd say we did pretty good.

I always forget to budget cabs to and from O'Hare as well. I think it's important for most international flights, especially when you're not flying direct, since flying is sometimes such an exhausting experience.

Katie, you guys did better than good -- you did great!

My husband and I are presently wrestling with how to get to Iceland in early June before prices start to rise again...and you've inspired me to keep hunting for a great fare.

Thank you for finding me so that I could find you, just when I needed you most. Your posts on Iceland are all so helpful!

Hooray for this being a successful trip for you...and on finally getting to South Africa later this year!
