Dan and I have been dreaming of going to South Africa for about 2 years now. Every time we came close to buying the tickets, they would jump up in price to an unaffordable level. For the last 3 months, I have been terrified that it would happen again. Before we left for Iceland, tickets from Chicago to Johannesburg were around $1140 each on Iberia. I wanted to buy them before we left, but I also wanted to have a cushion of money while we were traveling, just in case. So we tried to be very budget-conscious while in Iceland so that we could buy them as soon as we got back, terrified all the while that by the time we returned the price would have risen beyond our reach. Well, the ticket price has gone up, but only by about $40 each.
Yesterday I bought the tickets.
So we are really, truly, officially going to South Africa from December 16th to January 1st. We'll actually be on the plane for New Year's Eve, but that saved us over $500 and it'll give us an extra day to recover before we head back to work.
Let the planning begin!

I absolutely cannot wait for your trip report from this. We may go the year after you or two years after since my husband has the week after Christmas off of work.
this will obviously be my favorite trip of all! (and i'm hoping this means my face will make a guest appearance on your blog.) definitely the best birthday/christmas present ever! oh, and total side note--when you're looking into wine tours, make sure the one you pick goes to fairview. the wine there is incredible and best of all, they have a dairy and make their own cheese!!!! xoxo
