When is a Deal Not a Deal?

Every month, Budget Travel (my favorite magazine and the only one I subscribe to) publishes a list of the best travel deals in their magazine and online. This month, a trip to Iceland caught my eye.

$545 was the listed price. The description underneath said that covered airfare from Boston or New York to Reykjavik and 3 nights hotel accommodations. The fine print said that additional taxes and fees added up to around $250 per person. So the grand total would be about $1600 for airfare and 3 nights for two people. But, that didn't include the additional airfare from Chicago to NYC or Boston to get the deal. Adding that in, the total coast for this trip would be about $2000.

Curious to see how our trip compared, I did a little math.

flights from Chicago to NYC for two - $400
flights from NYC to Iceland for two - $900
hotel for six nights - $350
Total for our trip = $1650

Our trip not only worked out to be almost $400 cheaper, but includes 3 extra nights.

I'm not saying that the deals listed by Budget Travel, or any travel publication or website, aren't good deals. Often they offer great discounts on the original price. But just because something is a deal, doesn't mean you are getting the best possible price. Before you jump on one of these so-called deals, do a little research to find out how much the trip would cost if you booked it on your own.
