When Dan and I were first invited to Nicole and Alex's wedding celebration (they were actually married in April of last year) and told it would be a casual affair at a dance hall in Hill Country Texas, we knew this would be like no other "wedding" we'd ever seen. We were expecting a
weekend of wild and crazy
Hammel fun and we certainly got it.
Everyone convened at the
surprisingly nice Hampton Inn in
Boerne (pronounced Bernie) on Friday afternoon. Shortly after we hit the pool, the rest of the family arrived, bringing with them plenty of libations. There was lots of chatting, laughing, catching up, drinking, swimming, and even funny-hat wearing.

We were finally kicked out of the pool area around 11pm, an hour after its official closing time. But no worries - we just loaded up the "party cart" and moved to one of the suites.

The next morning a group of us headed into San Antonio to explore, returning around 1pm for more poolside fun - so much that the huge steer in the adjacent field wandered over to get a better look.

Around 4pm, we boarded the party bus that would take us to the Nelson City Dance Hall, 10 miles away. As soon as we pulled up, we knew this multi-building complex with the indoor dance hall, outdoor seating, and plenty of Texas kitsch would be a lot of fun.

After a delicious dinner of heaping plates of barbecue, the country band took the stage and got the party started. From there, the night went by in a crazy, happy blur.
We tried on silly shirts and hats.

We watched couples two-step on the dance floor,

and watched Nicole and Alex take their "first dance".

We drank Lone Star beer and margaritas.

We, or rather Dan, did the "Chicken Dance".

I traded shoes with Mary, who hasn't worn heels in years.

I got on stage with the rest of the women to sing along to "Mustang Sally",

and watched as Nicole rocked out on a flaming bar to "Sweet Home Alabama".

And of course, Dan and I showed off our sweet
dancing - er, flailing - skills on the dance floor.

By the end of the night we were exhausted, but it was one of the most fun and unique weddings we've ever been to.
